Ischua Creek Statement

Recently we were contacted by local media for our reaction to the situation on Ischua Creek near Franklinville, where it had been reported that a local company has discharged materials into the creek that caused a large scale kill off of not only fish but other animals in the creek.

This is our official response and position.

Thank you for reaching out to Western New York Trout Unlimited. Like many local residents WNYTU was both saddened and outraged when made aware of the Ischua Creek environmental disaster. We have been following the situation very closely. As you are aware many miles of creek have suffered extreme damage to fish, amphibians, aquatic organisms and mammals. I personally inspected several sections of the creek over the weekend and observed no sign of life in and around the creek.
WNYTU is requesting that the NYDEC provide an expedited report on the cause of this incident and what steps will be taken to prevent this from happening again on not just Ischua Creek but all waters that receive discharge from Industry and Agriculture throughout Western New York. We will also be requesting they provide a reclamation plan for the creek. We have brought this to the attention of the New York State Council of Trout Unlimited. In addition, the chapter is planning to implement a Stream Watchdog program emphasizing to our membership and the public to keep a close watch on streams for potential problems and report accordingly.

Sincerely,
Joe Morgan
President
