Do You Know What WE Want for Christmas? Clean Water!

Ah, the holidays. The hustle and bustle. That peppermint mocha wrapped in gloved hands.

Ya know the most important ingredient in that peppermint mocha?? Clean water.

Ya know what goes great with that holiday treat? That warm feeling you get when you know you’ve stood up for clean water!

And, speaking of hustle…..

On November 17, 2025, the U.S. EPA and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (the “Agencies”) jointly announced a proposed rule to dramatically restrict which bodies of water are protected by the safeguards of the Clean Water Act.

The Clean Water Act (CWA) is the main U.S. law protecting our waters, aiming to keep them clean for swimming, fishing, and wildlife by controlling pollution from industries and cities, requiring permits for dumping anything into waterways, and funding sewage treatment plants. It sets rules for "point sources" (pipes) and now addresses "nonpoint sources" (runoff) to restore water quality, making it unlawful to pollute without a permit.

Think of the Clean Water Act as the rulebook for keeping America's lakes, rivers, and coasts clean. It says, "You can't just dump your waste into the water" and forces polluters to get permission, use cleaner methods, and help build the systems needed to treat sewage, all to make sure we have healthy, usable water.

The Agencies’ proposed rule would strip Clean Water Act protection from millions of acres of wetlands, countless miles of streams, including seasonal and ephemeral ones, and threaten the health of an untold number of watersheds across the country.

The public comment period on this ends
1/5/26 so there is not a lot of time to speak up.

The good news is it takes less time to do this than it takes to make that mocha.

Follow this link, enter your info and “Order up!”, just like that, you’ve told your elected officials you are strongly opposed to the proposed WOTUS rule change.

If you’re so inclined, you can even personalize your message which would make it that much more impactful.

Know that by taking this small action, you will have helped TU in the fight to protect our drinking water, watersheds and the nation’s trout and salmon fisheries so they can remain healthy and productive.

We all live downstream, even on the ephemeral ones.
